Zurich - No delays

With 50 km/h wind persuading the heavy snow to drive horizontally across the runway at  Zurich Airport, a betting man would have short odds on my connecting fight to Ljubljana being delayed or canceled. Ahoy! Through the ice laden aircraft window my eyes adjusted to an invasion of snow ploughs powering two by two along the adjacent runway. More then fifty heavyweights with fight in their eyes. Mother nature was out muscled and left wanting.

My flight to Slovenia departed on time and arrived ahead of schedule. Hop Swiss!

Proof heathrow and others are happy to wear their socks slumped around their ankles.

A very bright future

2012-02-12
by Ben Pankhurst

Last week we were very lucky to have the opportunity to photograph the Gemasolar plant 60km outside of Sevilla, Spain.

We first caught sight of the of the impressive glowing tower from 40 km away. Like a shining star it guided us to its gates.

Imagine 2650 25mmirrors strategically positioned the radiate to a 140 m tall central tower. Better still we could see each beam of light , this sight was surreal.

Gemasolar is the first commercial-scale plant in the world to apply central tower receiver and molten salt heat storage technology. The relevance of this plant lies in its technological uniqueness, since it opens up the way for new thermosolar electrical generation technology.

Characteristics of Gemasolar:

  • Rated electrical power: 19.9 MW
  • Net electrical production expected: 110 GWh/year
  • Solar field: 2,650 heliostats on 185 hectares
  • Heat storage system: the molten salt storage tank permits independent electrical generation for up to 15 hours without any solar feed.

The prolongation of the plant's operating time in the absence of solar radiation and the improvement in efficiency of the use of the heat from the sun makes Gemasolar's output much higher than that which is delivered by other technologies in a facility with the same power.

The notable increase in the plant's power efficiency guarantees electrical production for 6,500 hours a year, 1.5 to 3 times more than other renewable energies. The plant will thus supply clean, safe power to 25,000 homes and reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions by more than 30,000 tons a year.

The power generated by Gemasolar will be sent through a high-tension line to the substation of Villanueva del Rey (Andalusia, Spain), where it will be injected into the grid.

Central tower technology

The inclusion of a novel molten-salt heat storage system permits the production of electricity in the absence of solar radiation.

The heat collected by the salts (capable of reaching temperatures above 500º) generates steam and produces electrical power. The surplus heat accumulated during sun hours is stored in the molten-salt tank.

In this way, Gemasolar can produce electrical power 24 hours a day for many months of the year.

Science or Art

Believe it or not this is science.

I would strongly argue there is an opportunity to combine both. Here is a challenge for town planers!

Sevilla - Moving on

2012-02-12
by

A city of contrasts - a statement often used in cosmopolitan cities but in this case I'm focusing on development.

Not taking away from the special ambiance, culture and style of both the city and it's locals. Sevilla is an unhappy mix of traditional grandeur and visional design amongst fabricated architecture and economic hardship. Unfortunately I felt the city was in regression and a clear indicator of troubled time across Europe. The impressive Plaza Mayor is accompanied on either side by empty commerce and derelict buildings. Both charge the emotions in the eyes of the artists but value has little returns.

Plaza Mayor, Sevilla.

It takes 24/h to get the shot

2011-11-16
by Ben Pankhurst

We are current working on a photography concept we have creatively named 24/h. Why? Yes you guessed it, we take one image of the same thing every hour over one day.

You will have to wait to see the final images but here is a sneak preveiw of two locations from my recent trip to Canada.

Grin and Bear it

by Ben Pankhurst

200m into my run around Lake Louise in the Canadian Rocky Mountains this morning I passed a sign reading "You have entered Grizzly Bear country.". A sane person may turn 180 degrees and continue striding-out upon the hotel treadmill, but I found the anxious fear was the perfect distraction and a great motivation to push on for a few more km's. Is there a business idea here?...

Houston we have an oil problem

2011-11-02
by Ben Pankhurst

Sure, the world needs to change it habits when it comes to balancing the economic demands and the environmental impact of the oil and gas industry. See the overwhelming size of this industry in Houston and it surounds, and you really stop and think "What the …. are we doing?". In my eyes this industrial blot is well overshadowed by the oil that gushes from every gigantic size meal - fast or gourmet. With such a heavy focus on sustainability surely taking care of people must be the highest priority. Forget BP and the like, let's start the clean up in the kitchen.
